Google made AI Search the default. Is your business still showing up when it matters?

Most US businesses still measure search success the way they did five years ago: keyword rankings, organic traffic, position one. That scorecard just stopped telling the truth.

At its I/O 2026 conference on May 19, Google announced the biggest change to Search in more than 25 years. AI Mode, once an optional experiment, is now the default search experience worldwide. The way buyers find suppliers has changed, and most companies have not adjusted yet.

Google rebuilt the search box for the first time in over 25 years and made its AI-first experience the default for everyone, powered by a new model called Gemini 3.5 Flash. By Google’s own numbers, AI Mode has passed 1 billion monthly users, and its queries have more than doubled every quarter since launch.

The box now reasons across text, images, files, video, and open browser tabs. Google also introduced background agents that keep researching a topic around the clock and report back, even after the user has closed the tab.

For a B2B query, the result is increasingly a synthesized answer rather than ten blue links. Your buyers are not always scrolling to your page. They are reading an answer that may or may not mention you.

Here is the part that should concern every marketing leader. Google confirmed that classic blue-link results still exist, but the default experience now leads with a synthesized AI answer. Ranking still matters. It is no longer enough.

You can hold position one and still be absent from the answer your buyer actually reads. Visibility now depends on whether AI engines can read, trust, and cite your site, not only on where you rank.

When your business is the cited source, you are the answer. When it is not, you are a link the buyer may never reach.

Three marketing habits quietly sink AI visibility:

  • Measuring traffic instead of citations and mentions
  • Writing for crawlers instead of for customers
  • Running the old search engine optimization (SEO) skill set against a new system

The skills that win now look less like classic SEO and more like a blend: part public relations, part product marketing, part data journalism. The goal shifts from chasing keywords to becoming the most citable, trustworthy source on the questions your buyers ask.

The IBT Online AI Search Gap Review is a structured assessment of how discoverable your business is across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, and a prioritized plan to fix what is holding you back.

It answers the question Google’s announcement forces every business to ask: what do AI engines see, trust, and cite about your business?

Over a three-month program, we:

  • Audit your AI discoverability and test visibility across five priority buyer prompts
  • Benchmark you against your top five competitors in AI search
  • Implement structured data, metadata, content rewrites, and answer-ready FAQ blocks
  • Optimize the third-party profiles and authority signals AI engines rely on
  • Train your team to monitor and maintain AI visibility

Every step pairs AI-empowered tools with human expertise. Our specialists, not an algorithm, decide what to fix first and why. We use AI Search Optimization (AISO), Generative Engine Optimization (GEO), and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) so your business appears in the answers your buyers actually read, in the markets and languages where they are searching.

Structural shifts reward the companies that move first. The businesses that fix their AI visibility now will be the cited, trusted sources when buyers ask. The ones who wait will spend next year trying to catch up.

You do not need every piece in place to start. If you have your top buyer questions, your target markets, and access to your analytics, we can move fast. If you do not, we will guide you.

What is an AI Search Gap Review?

It is a structured assessment of how discoverable your business is across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, paired with a prioritized plan to close the gaps. We test your visibility against real buyer prompts, benchmark you against your top competitors, and implement the fixes that help AI engines read, trust, and cite your site.

How is optimizing for AI search different from traditional SEO?

Traditional search engine optimization (SEO) works to rank your pages in a list of links. AI search optimization works to get your business named inside the synthesized answer the engine writes. You can rank on page one and still be missing from that answer, so the goal shifts from ranking to becoming the cited, trusted source.

Will my business still show up on Google if I do not optimize for AI search?

You may still rank in classic results, but the default Google experience now leads with an AI answer. If your site is not part of what the model reads and cites, your buyers may never reach your link, no matter where you rank.

Do I need to rebuild my website?

No. We optimize and enhance the site you already have. The work focuses on structure, content, schema, and authority signals, not a ground-up rebuild.

Does this work for international and multilingual markets?

Yes. Your buyers ask AI engines questions in their own language, so we optimize for visibility across the markets and languages you serve, not only in English. This is core to how we help US exporters and manufacturers grow.
